United Way Receives Statewide Donation to
Fight Hunger from Land O'Lakes Foundation

Monroe County United Way Gives Money to Salvation Army East Stroudsburg Corps

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA - May 7, 2012 -- For the third consecutive year, United Way of Pennsylvania received a donation to fight hunger from Land O'Lakes Foundation, an organization that helps rural communities prosper and prepare for tomorrow by donating resources that develop and strengthen organizations dedicated to human service, education and youth, civic and art endeavors
This year, the United Way of Monroe County selected the East Stroudsburg Corps of the Salvation Army to be the local recipient of the Grant and gave $2,000 to help fight hunger in Monroe County. "We are pleased to support the important work of the Monroe County United Way in the fight against hunger," said Tony Ross, President of United Way of Pennsylvania. "During these difficult times, this donation will help many families in Monroe County and across Pennsylvania."

Major James Gingrich of the East Stroudsburg Corps said, "We appreciate being selected as the recipient for this grant." With the U.S. Census Bureau now rating almost half of all Americans in the poor or low-income categories, The Salvation Army nationwide is seeing heavy demand for food relief. Monroe County is no exception as more people are reaching the end of their savings. Gingrich continues, "We don't feed statistics, we feed people, and right now, we are feeding families and individuals in need which includes a whole new population coming to us for food. Our ranks are being joined by the formerly middle-class, a group that's just begun to embrace a nightmare they probably thought they'd never see - no money for food. With foreclosures and costs rising, not to mention the effects of recession, times are hard for many in our community."

The money received from United Way and Land O'Lakes will directly be used to feed residents of Monroe County and will feed over 500 families for two months." Gingrich concludes, "In these tough economic times, we have seen an increase in families that need food to get by. We thank Monroe County United Way, Pennsylvania United Way and the Land O'Lakes Foundation for this generous donation."
